PLACE OF WORK:

Dugway Proving Ground is seeking applicants for s Summer Hire to work as Physical Science Technicians on Dugway Proving Ground, UT. Dugway Proving Ground is approximately 50 minutes from Tooele, Utah, and 90-minute drive from Salt Lake City, Utah. Position is FULLTIME/TEMPORARY, NTE 30-SEP-2023, may be extended to 31-DEC-2023

This position is being advertised at both the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. If selected at the GS-4 level, you may be noncompetitively promoted to the next level once all conditions for advancement have been met. This includes but is not limited to: 1 year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level, meeting Time-in-Grade, and having an acceptable work performance. Management may select from any level for which this position is advertised and for which the applicant is qualified.

Job Responsibilities

Accompanies higher graded physical scientists and physical science technician personnel on field reconnaissance to obtain scientific data.

Assists with the collection of scientific air quality, water quality, and hazardous materials data in the field, etc.

Reviews office files, published reports, library holdings, and materials held by other agencies to obtain sufficient information to prepare scientific data reports.

Operates standard analytical equipment in accordance with applicable procedures.

Specialized Experience

EXPERIENCE: In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Experience for the GS-4: In order to be found qualified, your resume must reflect at least six months of general experience in physical science or a related field, and six months of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-03 grade/level position in the federal service performing: basic instrument or checks to ensure results of analysis or documented procedures performed are correctly recorded in accordance with standardized procedures and operations.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE for GS-04: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position: successful completion of a full 2-year course of study above high school, that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics. (TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE PROVIDED).

 

Specialized Experience for the GS-5: In order to be found qualified, your resume must reflect one year of specialized experience:  1. assisting with setting up, operating, maintaining or calibrating a variety of test equipment with known standards. 2. Assist with gathering, recording, or assembling pertinent data and report observations and findings to appropriate personnel. This definition of specialized experience is typical of the work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-4).

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE FOR THE GS-05: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position: successful completion a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in an appropriate field of physical science, or a bachelor’s degree in any other field that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics. (TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE PROVIDED)

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. Conditions of Employment
