Job Summary

  • Serves as an Electronics Technician in the Fire Control Branch of the Automotive Instrumentation Division, Automotive Directorate, at the U.S. Army Aberdeen Test Center (ATC).  

    ATC provides test and test support services for authorized customers within and outside of DoD, including Government and non-Government organizations, domestic and foreign. Perform comprehensive test and training, both real and simulated, exploit emerging technologies, and develop leading-edge instrumentation and test methodologies. 

    PLACE OF WORK: This position is located within the U.S. Army Test & Evaluation Command, Aberdeen Test Center (ATC) within Automotive Directorate, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD.

    This announcement uses the direct hire authority DHA for Domestic Defense Industrial Base (DIB) & Major Range and Test Facilities Base (MRTFB) in DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.

    Salary includes applicable locality pay or Local Market Supplement.

  • ATEC uses salary control points within the salary range to allow for differentiation in the level of positions within the same broadband. Therefore, the salary for this position will be set no higher than $129,591.35, with locality.

Job Responsibilities

Leads a project team of electronics and engineering technicians engaged in the application, measurement, and recording of embedded computer-based data acquisition systems and associated signal conditioning. Projects overseen are complex, diverse, and related to the performance characteristics of combat and tactical vehicle systems, as well as general support equipment. Serves as the technical point of contact and coordinator for all matters related to the utilization and implementation of embedded computer-based data acquisition systems needed to support automotive and general equipment test efforts. Monitors and coordinates all technical issues related to the application of embedded systems in testing; ensures that junior staff are applying technology properly; and coordinates work requests with test engineers and/or other technicians. Participates in the planning, procurement, and scheduling of personnel and equipment necessary to meet workload demands. Serves as the principle point of contact for all technical and operational matters related to the implementation and utilization of embedded data acquisition systems in testing. Plans, organizes, and coordinates data acquisition requirements; and ensures accuracy and timeliness of results. Conducts experimental tests and development studies to improve automotive and general equipment test methodologies and instrumentation capabilities; and serves as the system manager for embedded systems and associated signal conditioning assets.

Plans, organizes, coordinates, and conducts complete projects of a broad and complex nature for the experimentation, development, test, evaluation, and implementation of advanced automotive and general support equipment embedded system test instrumentation. Assignments are often characterized by a lack of precedents and guidance, frequently requiring ingenuity and revision of basic engineering design practices. In accomplishing assignments, directs the work of lower grade technicians and specifies portions of broad tasks to others. Works with a high degree of independence in designing experiments necessary to validate new concepts; performing final evaluations of new instrumentation; and determining overall system reliability, accuracy, and general capability. Reviews and analyzes long range plans and technical forecasts. Uses various command schedules to predict future needs for automotive test instrumentation. Liaises with key engineering personnel in the Command, as well as other government agencies and private industry, to discuss technical problems and exchange of information. Makes recommendations to improve test methodology and instrumentation capabilities.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED. You will be evaluated based on your level of competency in the following areas:

Knowledge and overall experience with troubleshooting and repairing electronic components, reading technical drawings, wiring diagrams and schematics, soldering, wiring, and making cables, application of instrumentation and data acquisition systems, fabrication and welding, and use of diagnostic equipment. 

Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. 

Ability to identify and resolve complex problems. 

Conditions of Employment

1. Position requires travel away from the normal duty station (up to 20% of the time).

2. Position requires participation in the Medical Surveillance Program per ATC REG 385-2.
