Job Summary

The mission of the US Army Aberdeen Test Center (ATC) is to provide test and test support services for authorized customers, within DoD and outside DoD, including government and non-government organizations, domestic and foreign. Provide comprehensive test and training both real and simulated; provide expert knowledge and technical services including instrumentation application, facility operations, manufacturing and fabrication; exploit emerging technologies; and develop leading edge instrumentation and test methodologies.

This Engineering Technician position is located at the US Army Aberdeen Test Center, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.  It is in the Survivability/Lethality Directorate, Experimental Fabrication Division. 
 

Job Responsibilities

As an Engineering Technician (Mechanical) the employee performs experimental fabrication and design assignments in connection with testing, research, development and field support of automotive components, materials and systems; land and sea based weapons components, materials, and systems; test facilities, components and assemblies; and items of similar nature. Serves as a project leader within the Experimental Fabrication Team. As such will provide the assigned work group goals, objectives, technical guidance and directions. Reviews, plans and organizes, as required, all phases of the assigned project taking the customer’s requirements into consideration.
 
Duties:
  • Evaluate alternative fabrication methods and manufacturing processes, surface finishes and hardness requirements, and specified dimensions and tolerances, clearances, fits, weights, etc.
  • Review designs, engineering drawings, specifications/standards, bill of materials, etc. to determine fabrication operations and methods involved, equipment/processes to be applied, time required to complete each task, order of manufacturing operations, and material types and quantities based on program requirements/constraints.
  • Monitor status of work in process as it pertains to compliance with customer’s requirements (i.e., performance, schedule, resources, budgetary compliance, quality, etc.).
  • Participate in multiple assignments, leads and supports team members in accomplishment of the team’s goals and objectives, and independently follows up and reports progress on each to the Experimental Fabrication Team Supervisor.
  • Must be able to instruct and/or assist fellow employees in the set-up and operation of all equipment.
  • Perform welding on fixtures using the following processes; gas tungsten arc weld, gas metal arc welding, pulsed gas metal arc welding and shielded metal arc welding.
  • Must be able to work with both English Standard and Metric systems of measure, converting freely between systems as needed.
  • Provide technical support to requests for field support/failures.
  • Prepares, documents and maintains information IAW QA requirements on each assigned project such as equipment used, procedures followed, results obtained, etc., for review by the Experimental Fabrication Team Supervisor.

Job Qualification

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience understanding the standard welding symbols and terminology; experience with various welding processes to include Gas Metal Arc Welding-Pulse, Shield Metal Arc Welding, and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding; and diagnosing, identifying, and repairing common welding equipment malfunctions.  This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08/NJ-02).

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
  • The employee must be able to work in all-weather environments, including outdoors and unconditioned areas.
  • Work is performed at elevated heights, in confined spaces, and in environments that may require a respiratory mask.
  • This position is subject to the ATC control point policy. For this position, the control point/salary cap will not exceed $94,581.

Travel Requirements

Up to 10% Travel
