Job Summary
The United States Army Test and Evaluation Command is posting this advertisement to fill a current vacancy. Chosen candidate will serve as an Engineering Technician (Mechanical) supporting the Metrology & Simulation Division, Metrology Branch at Yuma Test Center in Yuma, AZ. A selection will be made at the GS-0802-11 grade level soon after the closing date.
Incumbent serves as a Mechanical Engineering Technician to the Chief, Metrology Branch in the non-destructive test (NDT) areas of magnetic particle inspection, liquid dye penetrant inspection, borescope inspection of gun tubes, radiographic, ultrasonic/infrared inspection, metrology, and related ordnance nondestructive tests. Performs non-professional technical work in engineering for the purpose of employing nondestructive testing and measuring equipment to acquire test data. Incumbent uses a practical knowledge of engineering principles, methods, metals, composites, and techniques.
Job Responsibilities
As an Engineering Technician (Mechanical) you will:
- Perform non-destructive inspection of ordnance materials using magnetic particle inspection, liquid dye penetrant inspection, ultrasonic, infrared, and eddy current.
- Perform mass properties inspection and evaluation of ordnance materiel such as cannon tubes, breeches, hubs, gears, and components utilizing electronic and manual star gauges, pullover gages, digital comparators, coordinate machines, precision measuring instruments, and related instrumentation.
- Prepare required reports and advises test directors of the results of the NDT inspection analysis.
- Maintain necessary supplies and proper inventory levels of NDT inspection working supplies.
- Prepare the necessary documentation to order the required supplies.
- Maintain current knowledge and proficiency in the fields of NDT required to perform the function of this position.
- Provide input to various commodity test directors and engineers on the adequacy and desirability of various test and measurement methods.
- Determine gun tube wear and life conditions.
- Provide guidance in terms of procedures, techniques, and guidance on the establishment of gun tube life and conditions for compliance with test requirements and established standards, policy, or practice.
- Provide advice and guidance for selection of gun tubes to meet specified test conditions required by project engineers.
- Maintain contact with government agencies responsible for specific gauge design, manufacture, and assembly to assure this agency keeps abreast of latest developments.
- Inspect for functionality of tools, devices, and gauges.
- Reject items which cannot perform function to specifications.
- Work with other section personnel in the design, development, and acquisition of measurement equipment.
- Develop specifications for acquisition of section equipment resources in relationship to measurements and weapons evaluation.
- Perform acceptance tests on equipment acquired and provides recommendations on acceptance/rejection of such.
- Support project engineers in developing test plans and inspection schedules.
- Evaluate test results for weapons inspection and evaluation activities.
Job Qualification
In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To Qualify at the GS-11:
Specialized Experience:
Your resume must reflect one year of specialized experience performing non-destructive testing (NDT) inspections used to evaluate military weapon systems where you perform your work with high degree of independence: 1) Plans, coordinates, monitors, and evaluates test projects that frequently require significant modification of standard practices of adaptation of instrumentation to obtain valid results. Tests include those of considerable complexity in that they involve new use of devices, equipment, or systems requiring a need for increased innovations and require increased technical skills and imagination (i.e., simulating unusual operational conditions); 2) Make analytical analysis of test results and consider the environmental impact of the work procedures; 3) Adapts precedents or makes significant departures from previous approaches to similar tests to provide for the specialized requirements for some tests; 4) Analyzes test results and recognizes gaps in existing data and further investigates conflicting results, interprets test data, and prepares reports of the test methods and presenting results. Proof of relevant NDT inspection experience must be clearly stated in your resume and be made available upon request. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-10).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this grade level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Conditions of Employment
- You must obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.
- Two-year probationary period may be required.
